Karen's been with us a few months now so it was more than time to officially, through the medium of blogging, introduce her to you all. So please welcome our Account Director, Karen Porter, in a role which is new to theblueballroom and one she has slid into with ease.
Let's start with a bit about you. Any hobbies, things you love?
I'm an avid dog lover who spends leisure time out and about with the hound, a beautiful black lab, absorbing the fresh air and taking in the wonderful Surrey countryside. I find nature to be a real tonic for everyday stress, so on a Sunday night I can be found with my feet up in front of Countryfile wondering if I could ever be a shepherdess in the highlands of Scotland!
Walking, kayaking, skiing and wildlife-watching all feature on my list of great things to do, so previous holidays have included husky sledding in Finland, elephant tracking in South Africa and hiking in New Zealand. And when it’s time to refuel at the end of the day I love carbs (don't we all?) – Italian treats such as Carbonara and Risotto are my favourites – followed by a creamy, chocolatey pudding!
What is your favourite thing about being an Account Director, particularly agency side?
It's a real privilege to be granted access to different organisations; to be given unique insight into their cultures, aspirations and challenges and then have the opportunity to help them to improve and develop. All of the people I have met so far, have been proactive, focused and determined to succeed. This, in turn, means they are very happy to answer questions and offer up the information that will help us to help them.
What has been the best project you’ve worked on so far in your Account Director life?
During my career, I have worked on some great projects – crime-busting campaigns, award-winning and culture-changing internal communications initiatives, royal visits and the 2012 Olympics to name but a few. I have been very fortunate to work with some great people who have all pulled “it” out of the bag to deliver amazing results.
It’s early days as an Account Director, but I have already enjoyed the excitement of a competitive pitch, the energy of creative brainstorms and the satisfaction of delivering a great project. The best bit surely has to be meeting with a very happy client who is benefiting from our work and I am looking forward to experiencing more of that!
Give me your three tips on being the on-the-ball account director that you are?
I am learning every single day at the moment so please ask me again in 12 months’ time! Meanwhile, I am keen to listen hard, say yes to all learning opportunities and support the team wherever I can.
