Ahead of our next thefuturestory event - The Power of One, at RADA studios on October 15th, we've asked our speakers three questions to give you some insight into their talks on the day. First up is Christine Mockford, a speech coach and member of Toastmasters International, Christine's talk will be all about what makes people effective communicators, especially in front of an audience. Why did you agree to speak at thefuturestory?

I think there's a lot of fear and anxiety around standing up and speaking in front of an audience and I wanted to demystify the process and encourage people to have a go.

How did you get into your current profession?

I've always been interested in communication and how people express themselves. It started with a love of words and writing and a love of music and singing, but there was one area I had always been very anxious about and that was speaking in front of groups, even small groups and so I avoided it. About 10 years ago that felt like a real limitation in my life and I wanted to address it, so I joined a public speaking club and it all grew organically from there. After a while I was asked to mentor others and run workshops in different speaking clubs and that progressed to coaching people and running workshops outside of speaking clubs. More recently I've started going into schools and working with young children and I'm very excited to see how that will develop.

What do you hope the audience will get out of your talk?

Insights into what's really important when speaking in front of an audience and the courage and confidence to get out there and try it.
