DigitalSurrey took place at the Mandolay Hotel in Guildford last night. The community of digital enthusiasts was joined by the local Chartered Institute of Marketing networking group, which made for a great attendance. The speaker was Professor Paul Springer, writer and educator on innovation in digital communications. He gave a very engaging insight into a range of success stories from leaders in advertising, marketing and search, including key decisions behind the internet’s most effective communication. Paul talked about the Pioneers of Digital who he had interviewed for his book of the same name. These pioneers included Stephen Fry, Gurbaksh Chahal, John Winsor and Thomas Gensemer. It was a fascinating insight into what gave them their inspiration as well as their tips for success including:

Being original is overrated. People have to get it first.

You can do anything on the web, the art is in finding new / interesting ways to do them

Another key take out was to remember that it is often the simplest idea that is the most effective - just think of the award winning Dumb Ways To Die!

The evening was too short to cover everything, but it was a wonderful introduction and definitely gave us all a lot to think about.

If you'd like to find out more, the book Pioneers of Digital is available on Amazon.

Thanks to Paul and everyone who attended for a great evening!
