Our Creative Director, Ben, shares his thoughts after six months at theblueballroom...
I was slouched on my sofa in a post-work daze after a particularly busy week. Scrolling through LinkedIn, a job ad caught my eye. “Head of Creative & Digital, Surrey Agency”. After clicking through, everything I read had me nodding with enthusiasm. It was an opportunity too good to miss. I was familiar with theblueballroom already. And I was ready for my next career challenge.
A month or so later, I was eagerly anticipating a call from the recruiter after my second interview. The wait was excruciating. Hours became days, days became weeks. Then, finally, at the last working hour on a Friday afternoon, she called. “You got it!” she exclaimed.
The first month at theblueballroom was a tremendous start. I was given a very warm welcome, and within the first week I was already pitching to a large professional services client (which we won, of course).
My new team were a mixed bunch of young and mature, digital and print, content and strategy. I was excited by the sheer breadth of skills and enthusiasm amongst these people, and it didn’t take long for us to form a trusting bond – something which I think is incredibly important in any team environment. The pace here seems just right for me – it’s not the largest studio I’ve managed, and it’s not the smallest either. But there are days when I feel like we could take on the world.

The variety of work at theblueballroom does not disappoint. In my short 188 days here, we've worked on events, websites, photos, videos, strategy, social, infographics, billboards, storyboards, ceremonies, and much more. But with variety comes challenges – tight deadlines, late nights, InDesign crashes, lost pitches, cold tea; all of which I am no stranger to, all of which can test relationships. Luckily, everybody here is more than happy to muck-in, and we pull in the same direction as one.
Highlights so far for me have been: Flying out to Hong Kong to help orchestrate Cathay Pacific’s Work Well Done campaign. Successfully pitching to Zurich for an integrated savings campaign. Video direction for our friends at Rentokil Initial. Thoughtful and considered branding for cancer treatment campaigns. Getting to know my team and what makes them tick. And most of all, shaping theblueballroom and theblueballroom Asia brand as we continue to grow and evolve.
To me, this feels like a homecoming. My commute is just a couple of miles and I’m back working in the town that I grew up in. Yet I have the opportunity to do some truly tremendous work across the globe with a great team beside me… who I don’t make nearly enough tea or coffee for*.
