- World of words
According to Global Language Monitor, which tracks the latest trends in word usage, the English language will reach the millionth word threshold on 10th June. Among the possible finalists are alcopops, bangster, quendy-trendy, slumdog, and wonderstar. Unsurprisingly, social media terms, ‘de-friend’ and ‘noob’, also stand a chance.
The number of English speakers has risen from 250 million worldwide in 1960 to 1.53 billion people who have English as their first, second or business language. But even with this increase in Anglophones and the number of words available, most of us only have about 14,000 words in our vocabulary.
Here at theblueballroom, we’re sure we come across new ones on a daily basis with all the work we do helping clients integrate social media into their internal communications. Twitter is just one of the social media tools in our communications toolkit (or a tweapon in the twarmoury) and is the fastest growing social networking trend. Terms like tweeterific, twellow, twitthis, tweetdeck, twibes and twitterverse are emerging all the time. (Even from today’s Social Media in a Corporate Context event: a twitter strategy = twatergy)
If you missed Jenni’s impromptu twitter-torial at a recent Melcrum Employee Engagement event, and want to get tweetwise there are a range of books to improve your netiquette (sorry!)
