What a day yesterday was at the Corporate Social Networking Forum at RIBA, London. After a day of stimulating presentations and in-depth panel discussions I left feeling more and more convinced that a) social media is here to stay and b) social media in internal communication really is on everyone’s agenda this year.
From debates about whether intranets still have a use, to technology failing us; what amazed me most (more so because of how I felt about it) was how I missed out on an entire sub-conversation taking place on Twitter. The technology has beaten me to it and I still have a month to go until my iPhone arrives, leaving me with the only tweet option of using my basic mobile phone and/or laptop – but wait, no reception or wifi (aaarrgghh!!).
At regular intervals the chair commented on the Twitter activity, colleagues back at the office were tweeting and commenting with others at the conference, debates about statements carried on whilst presentations were being given, a plea for iPhone chargers was read out at the lunch break – and I missed it all.
It was like I was in a room that was slightly misty: you can see what’s going on but you’re not quite sure if you’re missing something. As a real Twitter fan this was tough, but tougher as the topic was so close to my heart – using social media for internal collaboration.
It was a great day, and one that has confirmed just how important it is for people to listen to the online community and be aware that it’s there! Food for thought as I take to a panel debate at today’s Social Media in a Corporate Context event!
