Yesterday morning theblueballroom hosted its second Eye on Business event, looking at the value at work and Alain de Botton’s recent book The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work.
The morning sparked a great debate about happiness and work, the meaning of what we all do every day and how, as communicators, we try to engage the workforce with the ‘big picture’. One of the key themes from the morning that prompted this blog was about ‘the little things that matter’.
From money to trips aboard, incentive schemes have been big business for companies in recent years. But, as the recession bites harder and the money runs out, what are companies to do to ensure their staff are motivated? It would seem that to most, money is no longer a key motivator.
Looking at how people work every day, where they sit, what their immediate environment is like could be the starting point to engage them. From there you can build on their engagement with their working environment to their engagement with the business strategy.
There are many more themes we could discuss so why not check out a video on YouTube (a six-part presentation by Alain), which we used as the basis of this meeting, and ask yourself – why do you get up and go to work everyday?
